Research & Investigation

The Eastern Connecticut Paranormal Society conducts structured paranormal research and investigation in Connecticut, emphasizing documentation, historical context, and methodological transparency. Reported claims are treated as research questions rather than conclusions, with a focus on accuracy, preservation, and public education.

Research Philosophy

Reported paranormal phenomena often exist at the intersection of history, environment, perception, and narrative. ECPS approaches these claims through disciplined inquiry rather than assumption, recognizing the importance of context, documentation, and methodological restraint.

Our guiding principle is to find the truth — defined not by belief or speculation, but by careful investigation, critical analysis, and the preservation of verifiable records.

Methodology

Our investigations follow structured, research-driven protocols designed to reduce bias, preserve data integrity, and support long-term evaluation. Methods are adapted to each site based on historical relevance, research objectives, environmental conditions, and location-specific context. These standards are applied consistently across all investigations conducted in Connecticut and beyond.

Methodological components include:

  • Historical research using newspapers, photographs, maps, and archival public records

  • Site-specific investigation aligned with verified historical timelines

  • Environmental and contextual data collection

  • Formal logical analysis to assess consistency and evaluate alternative explanations

  • Documentation preserved for internal review, archival reference, and public education

Case Evaluation & Grading System©

0

Grade 0

All reported paranormal activity has been debunked. No evidence has been collected, and there are no objective findings of any kind.

1

Grade 1

Subjective paranormal experiences cannot be debunked, and at least one piece of evidence (e.g., EVP, photo, or video) has been documented.

2

Grade 2

Objective evidence is present, such as an EVP occurring in direct correlation with a photo or video. Devices (e.g., Spirit Box, Ovilus) respond to direct questions with relevant answers tied to the documented history of the location or its occupants.

3

Grade 3

Objective findings include a visible manifestation (non-orb) captured on photo or video. Audible voices or sounds are heard by the human ear and confirmed by recording devices. Manifestations do not display clear anatomical structure consistent with a human form.

4

Grade 4

Objective evidence includes a partial or full-body apparition captured on photo or video, including reflections in mirrors or windows. There may also be aggressive behavior without physical harm, or poltergeist activity (unexplained object movement).

5

Grade 5

Objective evidence includes violent behavior (scratching, biting, slapping, etc.) resulting in physical injury. Violent language or threats are heard and documented. Objects are moved with apparent intent to harm, religious artifacts may be disturbed or damaged, and unexplained markings appear on people or property, interpreted by investigators as suggesting a possible demonic or malevolent cause.

Documentation & Archival Standards

All research conducted by E.C.P.S. emphasizes thorough documentation and long-term archival preservation. Records are maintained to support transparency, reproducibility where feasible, and historical value. Findings are presented without presupposing cause or explanation. Documentation may include, but is not limited to:

Ethics & Limitations

E.C.P.S. recognizes the limitations inherent in the study of reported paranormal phenomena. Not all claims can be evaluated conclusively, and the absence of explanation does not constitute evidence of cause or mechanism.

Our work avoids sensationalism, respects property owners and institutions, and prioritizes historical integrity, methodological restraint, and responsible communication.

Participation in research does not imply endorsement of specific interpretations or beliefs.

Ongoing Research

E.C.P.S. is engaged in ongoing research and archival documentation projects involving historically significant sites. Detailed case documentation is published as research concludes and records are prepared for public release.

This page will be updated as investigations conclude and materials become available.

Research Collaboration

We welcome inquiries from institutions, property owners, preservation groups, and researchers interested in historically grounded investigation and documentation. Collaboration requests are evaluated based on research value, historical significance, and alignment with our mission and methodological standards.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

The following questions address how the Eastern Connecticut Paranormal Society approaches research, documentation, and evaluation of reported paranormal phenomena. These answers clarify methodology, limitations, and expectations for research-focused inquiries.

Q: How does E.C.P.S. approach paranormal research and investigation?

A: E.C.P.S. approaches reported paranormal phenomena through structured, research-driven investigation. Claims are examined within historical, environmental, and cultural contexts, with emphasis on documentation, methodological transparency, and long-term archival value rather than predetermined conclusions.

Q: Does unexplained data mean a paranormal cause has been identified?

A: No. Unexplained findings do not imply a paranormal cause. E.C.P.S. documents observations and contextual data without assigning causation where evidence is insufficient or inconclusive.

Q: What role does historical research play in your investigations?

A: Historical research is foundational to all E.C.P.S. investigations. Archival records, site history, documented changes over time, and primary-source materials are used to contextualize reported phenomena and guide investigation design.

Q: Are your research methods the same at every location?

A: No. Methods are adapted to each site based on historical relevance, environmental conditions, research objectives, and logistical considerations. While standards remain consistent, investigation protocols are site-specific.

Q: Are research findings always made public?

A: Not always. Findings are published only when documentation is complete and release is appropriate. Some materials remain archival or restricted due to ethical considerations, site sensitivity, or ongoing research.
