What to Expect from a Medium Reading: Why Your Expectations May Be Wrong

I recently gave a reading to a woman I had met at one of our presentations. We had already set the time and location, but on my way there, she messaged me to let me know her boyfriend would be joining us.
No issue—but it changed the dynamic.
When I know a reading is scheduled ahead of time, I typically begin focusing on that individual’s energy. I try to establish a baseline—what I refer to as a foundation—by asking my guides to start gathering information. With the boyfriend joining last minute,
I had about ten minutes to shift that focus.
It was enough to get a general sense of what he was searching for.
What to Expect from a Medium Reading (And What Not To Expect)
When we sat down, I went through my usual introduction:
Have you had a reading before?
Here’s how I receive information
I may connect with spirits—or read energy from the living
And most importantly:
“I get what I get, and I don’t get what I don’t get.”
That statement matters more than most people realize.
The Problem with Expectations
Before the reading started, I asked what they were hoping to get out of it.
She wanted insight into her life path and wondered if anyone from past relationships would come through.
The boyfriend said he didn’t have expectations—but it was clear he was looking for answers.
That’s where things get interesting.
Most people say they have no expectations. In reality, they do—they’re just unspoken.
And those expectations can interfere with how the reading is received.
How Messages Actually Come Through
During a reading, I’m not interpreting—I’m relaying.
What comes out of my mouth isn’t something I’ve analyzed or filtered. It’s information as it comes in.
Sometimes:
There’s immediate validation
Other times, there’s no reaction at all
But the most interesting moments are the delayed ones.
That’s what happened with the boyfriend.
At one point, he paused and said: “Didn’t expect that.”
That’s usually when you know something real just landed.
You Don’t Always Get the Message You Want
In most readings, clients are hoping to hear from a specific person—a parent, partner, or loved one.
I try to facilitate that connection.
But ultimately, that decision isn’t mine.
It’s theirs.
I once worked with a woman who wanted to hear from her parents. She lost them at a young age and was searching for validation—approval, reassurance, something to confirm she was on the right path.
Her parents did come through.
But so did others:
Extended family members
And even someone from her husband’s side
That unexpected connection ended up being the most meaningful part of the reading.
Which is often how this works.
Final Thought: Stay Open
If you’re seeking a reading, here’s the most important advice: Be open.
Be open to:
Messages you weren’t expecting
People you didn’t ask for
Answers that don’t match your assumptions
Sometimes you’ll get exactly what you want.
But more often, you’ll get what you need.

And that’s where the real value is. And that's what to expect from a medium reading.
