Anomaly: Something that deviates from what is standard, normal, or expected. Typically a term used when something is unidentifiable.
Area 51: Also known as Groom Lake, Area 51, it is an off limits government installation located in the Nevada desert, approximately 95 miles from Las Vegas, where it is claimed that scientists secretly work on crashed UFOs, supposedly to benefit the military using alien technology.
Aura: A supposed emanation surrounding the body of a living creature, viewed by mystics, spiritualists, and some practitioners of complementary medicine as the essence of the individual, and allegedly discernible by people with special sensibilities.
Cold Spot: Centralized area that is colder than the surrounding area. It is believed that something is trying to manifest or make its presence known.
Debunk: To disprove something that was thought to be paranormal.
Disembodied Voice: A voice that is heard with human ears.
Doppelganger: An apparition or double of a living person, said to be evil in nature.
Ectoplasm: A supernatural viscous substance that is supposed to exude from the body of a medium during a spiritualistic trance and form the material of the manifestation of spirits.
Entity: An unknown thing with distinct and independent existence.
Fun House Effect: This effect happens when floors, walls, stairs, or ceilings are not level, causing a sudden incline/decline that throws off one's balance; can cause dizziness, nausea or one to trip.
Ghost: An apparition of a dead person that is believed to appear or manifest to the living, typically as a nebulous image.
Haunting: A nagging, repeated occurrence of a spirit, ghost and/or entity.
Imprint: An imprint is something that is left by a person when alive and is still there. Whether it be an emotion or feelings, that can be associated with an object, land, house, scarf, watch, etc.
Intelligent Haunting (also known as a classic or traditional haunting): A haunting in which a spiritual entity is aware of the living world and interacts with or responds to it.
Levitation: To float in the air, defying gravity.
Manifestation: Spirit using energy to appear visually, as an EVP or disembodied voice, through smell or even touch.
Materialization: To come into perceptible existence; appear; become actual or real.
Matrixing: A very common occurrence as our brains are programmed to look for eyes or even faces when viewing an image.
Orb: A spherical ball of energy that is said to be the essence of the soul, minus the body.
Ouija Board: Also known as a spirit board or talking board. It is a flat board marked with the letters of the alphabet, the numbers 0–9, the words "yes", "no", "hello" (occasionally), and "goodbye", along with various symbols and graphics. This is known to be a portal for evil to enter our physical world and possibly possess user(s).
Paranormal: If we can’t prove it with science or debunk it, it’s paranormal.
Portal: A location where spirits can enter the physical realm.
Residual Haunting: A playback of a past event. The apparitions involved are not spirits; they are "recordings" of the event.
Séance: A meeting at which people attempt to make contact with the dead, mainly through the agency of a medium.
Sensitive: The ability to feel or sense energy or spirits' presence.
Shapeshifter: A person or being with the ability to change their physical form at will.
Spirit: The non-physical part of a person that is the seat of emotions and character; the soul.
Spirit Rod: An orb or ball of energy that is said to be the essence of the soul (without the body). Most orbs are in a sphere-like shape, a spirit rod is in a rod-like shape.
Stone-Tape Theory: The speculation that ghosts and hauntings are analogous to tape recordings and that electrical mental impressions released during emotional or traumatic events can somehow be "stored" in moist rocks and other items and "replayed" under certain conditions.
Supernatural (of a manifestation or event): Attributed to some force beyond scientific understanding or the laws of nature.
Telekinesis: The supposed ability to move objects at a distance by mental power or other non-physical means.
Trigger Objects: Items or personal belongings once used by spirits to encourage communication.
Vortex: A mass of whirling fluid or air, especially a whirlpool or whirlwind, thought to be a portal to the spiritual realm.
White Noise: Noise containing many frequencies with equal intensities. Also a great tool to use to communicate with spirits, as in the use of a spirit box.
Wraith: A ghost or ghost-like image of someone, especially one seen shortly before or after their death.
